Places to visit in Tashi Yangtse

Trashiyangtse or Tashi Yangtse is a small town in Yangtse Gewog, and the district headquarters of the Trashiyangtse District in eastern Bhutan. Located in close proximity to Chorten Kora which lies to the west, a dzong was inaugurated in Trashiyangste in 1997. At an elevation of 1750-1880 meters, Trashiyangtse is an ethnically and culturally diverse district and the inhabitants include Yangtseps, the regions indigenous dwellers, Tshanglas, Bramis from Tawang, Khengpas from Zhemgang and Kurtoeps from Lhuentse.
The people of the region have developed incredible skill at woodworking and paper making. The items they produce such as traditional wooden bowls are prized throughout the country.

Chorten Kora

Chorten Kora is an important stupa next to the Kulong Chu River in Trashi Yangtse, in East Bhutan. Nearby is a town of the same name. The stupa was built in the 18th century by Lama NgawangLodro, the nephew of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in order to subdue a harmful demon believed to have been living at the site where the chorten is now located. The stupa is modeled after the famous Boudhanathstupa in Nepal popularly known as Jarung Khashor. Chorten Kora took twelve years to construct.



Gomphu Kora

Gomphu Kora lies in the heart of the agrarian belt of eastern Bhutan. It is 23 kilometers from
Tashigang Dzong, the headquarters of Bhutan’s most populous district, and two kilometers from Duksum, and a quaint hamlet consisting of a few shops that serves the nearby farming community. Thedrive from Trashigang winds downhill for about 11 Kms, till the bridge at Chazam, and then swerves left and follows the course of the Dangmechu for another 12 Kms to Gomphu Kora. The headquarters of Trashi Yangtse Dzongkhag is located a further 33 Kms away.
